Buying Guide To Spirits: More Than 1000 Distilled Spirits & Fortified Wines Reviewed By The Beverage Testing Institute
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publishing (October, 1999)
Average review score:

A Great Little Rating BookThis is a great book that gives one ratings on all the world's major classes of spirits. It has a section that describes each type of spirit. Whiskies, Brandies, Rums, Vodkas, Gins, Tequilas, Liqueurs and fortified wines such as Port are covered. It covers spirits from the more inexpensive schnapps popular with the college crowd to the very pricey Scotchs and Cognacs. It rates each by a number and has tasting notes. An excellent way to choose, taste and expand ones knowledge of the world's spirits. While one may not agree with each rating, they seem to generally be in line with other guides. Remember, preferences are a matter of taste. Not everyone prefers the same things. This book is a great way to experiment.

C*-Algebras by Example (Fields Institute Monographs, 6)
Published in Hardcover by American Mathematical Society (June, 1996)
Average review score:

We learn from examples! The theory of C*-algebras grew from applications, such as
quantum theory and group representations. The continued
vitality of the subject owes much to the study of examples, such as the approximately finite-dimensional C*-algebras(also called AF-algebras), the Cuntz algebras, the reduced group-C*-algebras, and the examples from physics, based on Fock space techniques.
More ambitious classification schemes then flow from a closer
study of the examples. A great book for a beginning grad course!

Average review score:

The real deal on the New Market cadetsMs. Beller has told the true story behind the myth of the VMI New Market Corps of Cadets and that story is even better than the one that procedes it. This is a wonderful history of their participation and their accomplishments. I'd truly reccomend this to anyone with any interest in the American Civil War or teenagers making a difference.

Calvin Institutes of the Christian Religion
Published in Hardcover by Westminster/john Knox@press (01 January, 1960)
Average review score:

Don't get any other translationThis is simply the finest translation of Calvin's Insitutes. What makes this translation so good is the indexes of names, topics, and biblical verses....Mcneil's edition is tried and tested in this two volume set. It is a must have for anyone wanting to read Calvin in a durable hardcover edition. The indexes are invaluable in finding subjects that Calvin addresses. This is the one--i think. While the isbn matches, the price does not. You might want to contact amazon and make sure you are getting the hardback two volume set. The isbn is 0664220207 for the first book and 0664220215 for the second. The price should be around 60 dollars or so.

The Catholic Church and Democracy in Chile and Peru (Title from the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies)
Published in Library Binding by Univ of Notre Dame Pr (June, 1997)
Average review score:

Thumbs up for Smith and Fleet! The authors of the book reviews the role of Catholic Church in two prominent Latin American countries: Brian Smith wrote about the church in Chile and Michael Fleet wrote about the church in Peru. They outlined the roles that the Church have played in these countries in their history and argued that over the past 30 years the Catholic church have shifted its focus from siding with the country's power elite to the poor and the disadvantaged inside the country, although this shifts came with strong opposition both from Rome and often from the leaders of the church inside the country. Smith and Fleet also reviewed future challenges for the church in these contries, ranging from future relationship of the local church with Rome, challenges from the political elite and the growing Protestant movements inside the two countries, and conflicts on social issues such as birth control, abortion, and ordination of women as priests. I think the authors have done excellent jobs in arguing their case in this book. The issues they discussed in this book is relevant not only in Chile and Peru, but also anywhere in the world in which the Catholic Church has to deal with many difficult factors such as proper relations with the state and with Rome, and challenges to its authority from other faiths. My praise go especially to Dr. Smith, Ripon College's professor of religion and one of the best professor I ever had in Ripon College. He does not afraid to speak his mind and his thoughts in the book are always provocative but interesting, just like what he always does in his lectures. Dr Smith really does his own way in interpreting the Church's teachings, although he remains totally committed to the basic ideas of Catholic faith.

Cato Handbook for Congress: Policy Recommendations for the 106th Congress
Published in Paperback by Cato Inst (February, 1999)
Average review score:

Superb, Engaging, Persuasive AnalysesThe Cato Institute consistently generates truly outstanding scholarship -- scholarship that to any unbiased reader is first-rate, well-researched, and logical. These traits are found throughout The Cato Handbook for the 106th Congress. Each essay is relevant and substantive; no essay taxes the reader with excess verbiage or illogical or unsubstantiate claims. This is a gem of a collection.
In my own special field of expertise, antitrust, I can vouch that the essay on that topic (by Robert Levy and William Shughart) is especially good. There's more sound and creative thinking in this Levy-Shughart contribution than in any 100 antitrust articles randomly selected from law reviews and economics journals.
